Peter H. Peirce Homestead

Home to many over the Years

The term homestead means the house and adjoining land of a family.  From a historical standpoint, this property will focus on the fact that it is the ancestral home of Col. Peter H. Peirce who has played a significant role in shaping the Town of Middleborough.
However, years prior to the Peirce Family, this land was the native land of the Wampanoag tribe who took pride in maintaining the natural resources that are prevalent in the area.

Today, the Peter H. Peirce Homestead serves as the home of the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library, Inc, a 501 c3 nonprofit organization focused on honoring the past and supporting the future of our community by promoting literacy, culture, and community..

A Gift to Our Community

Honoring His Brother, Making a Difference

For years, the Middleborough community has known The Peter H. Peirce Homestead as the Law Office of Decas, Murray, and Decas. In June 2024, the house transferred from the Estate of Attorney William C. Decas to the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library.

It is with gratitude that the Board of Directors for the Homestead acknowledge the foresight of Attorney George C. Decas for saving this historic asset from destruction in the mid-1990s and to express our appreciation to Attorney William C. Decas for providing our nonprofit with the privilege of being stewards for the homestead.

Our Board is committed to having the homestead contribute to the future growth of services and programs that it supports while maintaining it as a valuable community asset located in Historic Downtown Middleborough. We look forward to what the future will bring!

The Board would be remiss if it failed to acknowledge the ongoing support of Sheila White and Attorney Dan Murray as we work to fulfill Bill Decas’ final wish.

Transitioning

Preparing for the Future

Transitioning from a building that has been mixed commercial and residential to one that will now include a historic location that is available for public use has required removing furnishings from the Decas, Murray, and Decas law firm and stabilizing tenant situations to ensure that occupants of the building maintain their areas in a respectful manner.
As the Board turns the page on the turmoil associated with terminating tenancy of some prior residents, we look forward to having both commercial and residential tenants who value this property.
